Show and Tell
May 15 › Sept. 23, 2012
From May 15 to September 23, 2012, the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain will present Show and Tell, an exhibition bringing together more than 40 artists from around the world whose work is highly contemporary in spirit yet still remains outside of the mainstream. Moving beyond the bewildering categories of art history, their works convey a sense of liberty, directness and freshness of invention while at the same time raise the important question of how we define contemporary art today. Taking these artists from the periphery and putting them on center stage, the exhibition will not only reveal the visual correspondences between the works, it will also explore the compelling narratives behind their creation. Through the presentation of films and documentation on the artists, it will tell the stories—powerful and moving—of talented individuals and minority communities. In an installation conceived by world-renowned Italian designer Alessandro Mendini, the exhibition will reveal the deeply personal visions of these artists and offer a glimpse into the fascinating universe of history, and nature that inspires them.
